Site Waste Management Plans
Site Waste ManagementWith effect from 6th April 2008 all construction projects (including domestic) that have a value in excess of £300,000 ex VAT will have by law to produce and implement a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP).

The Purpose of the plan is to address two keys issues:-

  1. Improve materials resource efficiency by promoting the economic use of construction materials and methods so that waste is minimised and any waste that is produced can be reused, recycled or recovered in other ways before disposal options are explored, and
  2. Reducing fly tipping, by restricting the opportunities available for the illegal disposal of waste by ensuring compliance with existing legal controls and providing a FULL AUDIT TRAIL of any waste that is removed from the site.

In the SWMP, forecasts are required to be made of quantities of each type of waste that will be produced on site and how it will be managed.

This live document will then be used to log actual types and amounts of waste produced and a record of
How it was disposed of
Who was responsible for the disposal both on site and the licensed contractor
Where it was disposed of
The amount in weight

The responsibility for this document falls with the client and the principal contractor and must be developed before work commences. Non compliance will result in stiff penalties – up to £50,000 fine in magistrates Court and unlimited fines in Crown Court.
